Assignment No. – 1

1.An oceanographer is to design a lab 5m high to withstand submersion to 100m, measured from sea
level to the top of the sea lab. obtain the pressure variation on a side of the container and the pressure on the top if the relative density of the salt water is 1.020

2.A fluid has a solute viscosity of 0.048 Pas and a specific gravity of 0.913. For the flow of such a fluid over a flat solid surface, the velocity at a point 75mm away from the surface is 1.125m/s. compute the shear stresses at the solid boundary, at points 25mm, 50mm, and 75mm away from the boundary surface.
presume (i) a linear velocity distribution and (ii) a parabolic velocity distribution with vertex at the point 75mm away from the surface where the velocity is 1.125m/s.

3.If we neglect the temperature effect, an empirical pressure-density relation for water is p/pa = 3001 x (?/ ?a) seven – 3000, where subscript ‘a’ refers to atmospheric conditions. Determine the compressibility of water at 1, 10 and 100 atmospheric pressure.

4.A pressure gauge attached to a rigid tank measures a vacuum of 42 KPa inside the tank. Determine the absolute pressure inside the tank.

5.Two coaxial glass tubes forming an annulus with small gap are immersed in water in a trough. The inner and outer radii of the annulus are ri and ro respectively. What is the capillary rise of water in the annulus if s is the surface tension of water in contact with air?
