Management Concepts & Applications (BA-1101)

[Time: 3 Hours] [Max. Marks: 100]

 


Before answering the question, candidate should ensure that they have been supplied the correct and complete question paper. No complaint in this regard, will be entertained after examination.

 


Note: Question 8 is compulsory. Attempt any two questions from section A, & any two from section B. All questions carry 20 marks each.

Section A

Q-1. To manage is to forecast & plan, to organize, to command, to coordinate & to control", comment. Explain the process & importance of management & explicate how it can be used to accomplish results in any organization? (20)

Q-2. Discuss the role of planning in modern business organization Enumerate the various steps involved in the planning process. (20)

Q-3. Explain the importance of Organizing. What do you understand by formal & Informal organization? Explain the concept of Authority, Responsibility & Accountability. (20)

Section B

Q-4. What is Manpower planning? Explain the term Job Analysis. How would you define Recruitment & how does it different from Selection? (20)

Q-5. What is motivation? What does Maslow's Need hierarchy theory tell us about people's need? (20)

Q-6. "Good communication is the foundation of a healthy organization" comment. Explain the essential characteristics of a good communication system. (20)

Q-7. "Planning & Controlling are the inseparable twins of management", discuss. What are the steps involved in controlling? (20)

 

Section C

Q-8. CASE STUDY (20)

 

A prominent business group introduced on test market basis a ready to drink natural fruit juice in January 2010 for the first time in India. The product received appreciation from the number of quarters including the

doctors in the first three months itself. Later, the company introduced the product in number of other markets as well. Infect the product posed a challenge to the then existing other local brands of soft drinks in the country.

 

The CEO of the company announced the success of the company in the bringing & popularizing a new product at affordable prize even to the low income group of people in a corporate function in the company. To his surprise the CEO saw some pieces of news in some newspaper that around ten people were admitted in the hospital due to the consumption of the company's product. The company received such complaints later as well.

 

The company thoroughly investigated the product samples in the reputed laboratory in the country.

 

The lab further reported that the preservatives used in the drink were not up to the mark & the packing was really done in a very bad way. After further enquiries done the company found that there were no checking & verification of the preservatives used in the product & not even for the packing material. There was a strong need for a quality control department immediately to be established which was not there before in the Production Department. The company withdrew all the products from the market & tendered an apology for the mistake undertook. It took 6 months to the company to regain the confidence of the customers & to recover the demand. The company incurred a total expense of around 10 millions for this mistake.

 

Questions:-

 

(a) What were the basic requirements of the company in order to avoid such sort of mistakes at operational level?

(b) In context of the above, being as the manager, what steps you would have taken on priority bases to avoid such kind of cases?

(c) "Planning is meaningless without control", explain the statement in reference to the above situation.
