Super-star Amitabh Bachchan has been selected by UNICEF as its new good-will ambassador. Bachchan will work for children in India and around the world and help them in protecting their rights.

'I am extremely pleased to accept this responsibility' Bachchan said, 'I hope that by adding my voice to the cause of children, it will make a difference in the lives of boys and girls here and across the region.'

UNICEF said it had requested Bachchan to be its goodwill ambassador because of his big popularity, feeling for humanity and people's faith in him.

As UNICEF ambassador, the experienced actor will speak on different issues related to children. His sweet voice will be used in drawing people's attention to issues like HIV/ Aids, polio eradication and the right of the girl child to education.

Maria Calivis, UNICEF representative in India said Bachchan's appeal to people is tremendous. He can influence people of all age groups and class. We want to use his connection with the people to work for children. He has already done good job for polio.

Bachchan appeared on television commercials to help Polio Immunisation Programme in 2003.
