CE-204: Hydraulic Engineering
Quiz-1, Date: 14-February-2007, Duration: 50 minutes, Maximum Marks: 50
?water = 1000 kg/m3, ?water = 106 m2/s, Vapor pressure of water = 2340 N/m2 abs.

1. A torpedolike device is tested in a wind tunnel with an air density of one kg/m3. The tunnel is one m in diameter, the upstream pressure is 1.5 kPa gage and the downstream pressure is one kPa gage. The mean air velocity is 30 m/s. The pressure is presumed to be constant across the parts A and C. Also presume that the viscous resistance force at the wall is negligible. What is the force experienced by the device and the supporting vane. [Marks20]

2. A gate of mass 2000 kg is mounted on a frictionless hinge along the lower edge. The length of the reservoir and gate (perpendicular to the plane of view) is eight m. For the equilibrium conditions shown, calculate the width, b, of the gate. [Marks15]

3. A uniform film of oil 0.13 mm thick separates 2 discs, every of 200 mm diameter, mounted co-axially. Ignoring the edge effects, compute the torque necessary to rotate 1 disc relative to other at a speed of seven rev/s, if the oil has a viscosity of 0.14 Pa.s (pascal-second). [Marks15]
