(a)    Define the specific speed of a turbine. Derive an expression for the specific speed of a turbine.    (4)

(b)    A turbine develops 9000 kW when running at 100 r.p.m. The head on the turbine is 30 m. If the head on the turbine is reduced to 18 m. determine the speed and power developed by the turbine.    (3)

An inward flow reaction turbine has external and internal diameters as 1.0 m ad

0.6 m respectively. The hydraulic efficiency of the turbine is 90 % w hen the head on the turbine is 30 m. The velocity of flow at outlet is 2.5 m/s and discharge at outlet is radial. If the vane angle at outlet is 15 and width of the wheel is 10 cm at inlet and outlet, determine: (i) the guide blade angle, (ii) Speed of the turbine, (iii) Vane angle of the runner at inlet and (iv) Volume flow rate of the turbine. (4)

Construct flow duration curve for the period of 8 weeks as 100 % time and find the average power that can be developed if the head available is 40 m and the overall efficiency of the plant is 85 %.    (4)

A centrifugal pump delivers water against a net head of 14.5 m and a design speed of 1000 r.pttn The vanes are curved back to an angle of 30 with the periphery. The impeller diameter is 30 cm and outlet width is 5 cin.Dctermine the discharge of the pump if manometric efficiency is 95 %.    (3)
