First Test: CE102: Geotechnical Engineering Time Allotted (!Hrs)

Note: Attempt all questions.

Ql. Dcscribc in brief the following,

a)    Degree of saturation

b)    Effective stress

c)    Critical Hydraulic gradient

d)    Liquidity Index

e)    Relative consistency 0 Uniformity coefficient g) Coefficient of curvature

(7)

Q2. A soil sample of clay 22 sq. cms in cross sectional area and 11 cm long is tested for permeability in a permeametr. The stand has a sectional area of one sq cm and head drops from 30cms to lOcms in 6 minutes and 20 seconds. Find the permeability of the sample.

(3)

Q3. Derive the relations to find equivalent permeability oflayers of soils in case of flow normal to bedding plane and for flow parallel to bedding plane.

(3)

Q4. A sample of dry soil weighs 68gm. Find the volume of voids if the tola! volume of the sample is 40ml and the specific gravity of solids is 2.65. Also determine the void ratio.    (3)

Q5.A sand deposit is 10m thick and overlies a bed of soft clay. The ground water table is 3m below the ground surface. If the sand above the ground water table has a degree of saturation of 0.45, plot the diagram showing the variation of the total stress, pore water pressure and the effective stress. The void ratio of the sand is 0.7. Take G=2.65.
