a) Discuss the importance of stereochemistry in drug action with examples.
b) What are the general objectives of prodrug design? Outline the ideal characteristics of prodrugs giving examples.
c) Enumerate the various kinds of receptor families and define in detail about drug action mediated by ion channels.

2) Attempt any 2 of the following: (8×2)
a) Give the general structure of muscarinic agonists and explain their structure-activity relationships.
b) Write notes on:
i) Ganglion blockers
ii) Medicinal uses of anticholinesterases.
c) Describe the complete synthesis of atropine and amphetamine and provide their medicinal uses.

3) Attempt any 2 of the following: (8×2)
a) Give the chemical classification of local anesthetics and define the ideal characteristics of local anesthetics.
b) Write the chemical synthesis of lignocaine and pethidine.
c) Write notes on:
i) Intravenous anesthetics
ii) Ultra short acting barbiturates.

4) Give the structure, chemical name, synthesis and mode of action of any 4 of the subsequent drugs: (4×4)

d) Carbamazepine
e) Caffeine

a) Classify anti-ulcer drugs. provide the synthesis and mode of action of omeprazole.
b) Write the complete synthesis of chlordiazepoxide and mephensin and mention their medicinal uses.
c) Write notes on:
i) Tricyclic antidepressants
ii) Mechanism of antipsychotics.
