When he was at Eton College, Lawrence Oates was far from being a brilliant pupil. Indeed so disappointing was his progress there that it became clear that if he were to have a chance of passing the exam for entry to the army as an officer, he would have to leave Eton and take special coaching from “Crammer”, whose business it was to “cram” knowledge into the heads of his pupils. 1 day when Oates was at this “crammer’s” school he came in from a round of golf to obtain a new brown bowler hat on the table. His 1st thought was “which of my companions has been such a silly ass to want to show off with such a hat ?”. He took the hat, kicked it round the hall, and finally put his arm through the crown. Imagine his feelings when the door opened and the headmaster appeared with a different pupil’s dad to whom the hat belonged. The headmaster took the parent back into his room and gave him a different cup of tea. Oates cycled to the closest hatter’s and got half a dozen brown bowler hats from which he invited the parent to select one.

A few years later when Oates had succeeded, not without difficulty, in getting into the army, he was in a trench and had his thigh bone broken by a Boer sniper. He was called on to surrender. “I’ve come out here to fight, and I haven’t had any real fighting yet”, were the words with which he rejected the demand of the Boer.

In 1910, when Captain R.F. Scott was arranging his Antarctic expedition, he wanted someone for the unpaid post of looking after the Iceland ponies. From the 2 hundred and fifty who volunteered Oates was chosen. After reaching the South Pole, where to their great disappointment they obtained that the Norwegians under Amundsen had been there before them, Scott and his companions had terrible hardships to face.

“Tragedy all along the line”, was Scott’s own description of the situation. Oates, weakened as a outcome of a badly frost-bitten foot, became so ill that he could hobble among only with the greatest difficulty. Feeling that his slow progress was hindering his companions and might endanger their lives, 1 day he walked out from the shelter of the tent into a blizzard, saying that he was just going outside and that it might be sometime before he returned. His companions knew that he was walking to his death and that his action was that of “a brave man and an English gentleman”.
