Sociology of Indian Society

Time: three Hours Max. Marks: 90

Instructions: i) ans all ques. as directed.
ii) Anwers should be written completely either in kannada or in English.

I. ans any 3 of the subsequent in five to 10 phrases each: (5x3=15)

a) Mention the 3 phases in the development of sociology and social anthropology in India.
b) What is empirical approach?
c) Mention dysfunction of caste system as delineated by J.H. Hutton
d) What is ‘Great Tradition’?
e) Mention any 5 village studies in India.

II. ans any 3 of the subsequent 20 phrases each: (10x3=30)

a) Write a note on the 1st phase in the development of sociology and social anthropology in India.
b) Briefly discuss the traditional features of caste system as delineated by G.S. Ghurye.
c) Discuss briefly 5 various approaches of Yogendra Singh in the study of social change.
d) Explain the features of sankritization.
e) Discuss briefly the significance of village studies in India.

III. ans any 3 of the subsequent in not exceeding 3 pages each: (15 x 3=45)

1) Examine the contributions of Indologists to the development of Indian sociology.
2) Critically examine the views of Bougle on Indian Caste System.
3) Explain the concepts of ‘Little Tradition’ and ‘Great Tradition’.
4) Examine the viewthat early sociological studies have presented a metaphorical and mythical picture about Indian villages.
5) Explain briefly the current debate on the nature of Indian sociology.
