British Literature (1340-1837) and Aspects of Language

SECTION-A

1. Annotate any 3 of the following: (3x5=15)

i) O My Love’s Like a red, red rose,
That’s newly sprung in June’

ii) How the Chimney-sweeper’s cry
Every black’ning Church appals;

i) The blend of dream and reality in Lamb’s essay.
ii) The situation of Dr. Johnson’s letter.
iii) Wordsworth’s views on the use of meter and other stylistic devices in poetry.

(Aspects of language)

5. ans all the subsequent questions:

I a) Identify a verbless clause, a non-finite clause and a finite clause in the subsequent.

i) Following an unused track, the cadets came across an ancient temple.
ii) Some NCC cadets went to a forest on an adventure camp.
iii) Although ruined, the temple had not lost its charm.

b) What is anon-finite clause? Illustrate with an example. 2

c) Identity the main clause and subordinate clause in the subsequent sentence. 3

Mention the function of the subordinate clause.

2) a) What is substitution? Illustrate with an example. 2

c) Read the subsequent passage and ans the ques. that follow:

The English language has many words which owe their origin to either Greek or Latin. These 2 languages in fact, are considered the source from which has sprung the now popular widespread English. For example, take the case of Greek ‘auto’ which means ‘self’ and we will understand words like ‘automobile’. ‘autobiography’, ‘autocracy’ etc. a knowledge of Latin and Greek roots is a splendid vocabulary stretcher as it enables us to understand nearly 14,000 English words.
