B.E. DEGREE EXAMINATION, 2010

(MECHANICAL ENGINEERING)

(FOURTH SEMESTER)

MEEC - 403 / PMEEC - 104.
FLUID MECHANICS
(Old and New regulations )
[may] [Time-3 hours]

Maximum marks : 60 marks
ans ALL ques..
ans any 1 full ques. from every unit
All ques. carry equal marks.

UNIT-I
1.A simple manometer (U-tube) contaning mercury is connected to a pipe in
which an oil of specific gravity 0.8 is flowing . The pressure in the pipe is
vacuum. the other end of the manometer is open to atmosphere. obtain the vaccum
pressure in pipe if the difference of mercury lebel in the 2 limbs is 200mm
and height of oil in the left limb from the centre of the pipe is 150mm beneath .

2. (a) describe the subsequent terms :
(i) Total pressure.
(ii)Centre of pressure.
(b) discuss briefly the subsequent :
(i)surface tension .
(ii) compressibility.
UNIT-II
3.Derive the continuity ewuation in cartesian
co-ordinates.
4.(a) elaborate the limitations of the bernoulli's
equation?
(b) discuss briefly the subsequent :
(i) Steady flow.
(ii) Unsteady flow.
UNIT-III
5.(a) What arer the characteristics of laminar flow?
(b) describe shear velocity for turbulent flow in circular pipes.
6.(a) describe the terms major energy losses and minor energy losses in pipe.
(b) What is a boundary layer ? Why does it increase with idstance from
the upstream edge ?

UNIT-IV

7.Describe Buckingham's method (or) pie-theorem to formulate a dimensionally
homogeneous formula ranging from the different physical qualities ranging from the different phusical
qualities effecting a certain phenomenon

8.In open channel , water is flowing at adepth of 1.50 m with a velocity of 7.5 m/sec . At a particular
location ,a hydraulic jump is formed and the depth increases to 2.2m. a different channel is
built where a similar jump is formed. If the flow depth in the new dynamically similar channel
is six m , estimate the flow velocity and height of the jump.

UNIT-V
9. (a) define the subsequent :
(i) Subsomic flow.
(ii) Sonic flow.
(iii) Supersonic flow.
(b) what is mach number ? why is this parameter so important for study of flow
of compressive fluids?
10. Prove that velocity of sound wave in a compressible fluid is provided by

where K and p are the bulk modulus and density of fluid respectively.
