1. A bolt is subjected to a direct load of 25kN and shear load of 15 kN.

Considering different theories of failure , determine a suitable size

of the bolt , if the material of the bolt is C 115 having 200 N/mm2 yieldstrength.
take the factory if safety as 2.

2.(a) discuss Soderberg and Goodman equations.

(b) A spherical pressure vessel with a 500mm inner daimeter
is welded from steel plates of cold drawn C20 steel of ultimate strength
440N/mm2 .the vessel is subjected to internal pressure which varies from
2N/mm2 to 6N/mm2 . if the reliability of vessel is 95% and the needed
factor of safety is 3, design the vessel for an infinite life period.

3.A shaft is supported by 2 bearings organizes one m apart . A 600mm
diameter pulley is mounted at a distance of 300 mm to the right of
the left hand bearing and this drives a pulley directly beneath it with the
help of a belt having maximum tension of 2.25 kN. a different pulley of 400mm
diameter is placed 200 m to left of the right hand bearing and is driven
with the help of an electric motor and a belt, horizontally to the right.
the angle of contact for both the pulley is 180degree and co-efficient if friction
is0.24.Design the diameter of the solid shaft ,allowing a working stress of
60 N/mm2 in tension and 40 N/mm2 in shearing for the material of
the shaft . presume the torque input and torque output are equal.

4.Design a leaf spring of a truck to subsequent specifications:
• Maximum load on springs = 160 kN
• Number of springs =4
• spring material =chromium vanadium steel.
• Permissible tensile stress = 600 Mpa
• Maximum number of leaves = 10
• Span of the spring =1,300 mm
• permissible deflection =90 mm
• E of the material = 210 GPa

5. Design a connecting a rod for petrol engine for the subsequent data:
• Diameter ot the pistion=68mm
• stroke length=80mm
• length of connecting rod=160mm
• maximum explosion pressure=3.5N/mm2
• Mass of reciprocating parts=2.5kg
• Speed=4000 rpm
• compression parts=8:1

7.A tool carriage of a lathe machine is driven by a screw revolving at 30rpm .
To drive the carriage , the maximum axial force exerted by the lead screw is
3kN. The length of screw is 1.8 m Design the lead screw . presume the
lead screw is made of .

8.Design and draw a cast iron protected kind flange coupling to connect
two shafts of 36mm diameter transmitting 15kW at 720 rpm. The overload
capacity is 1.25 times the avg. torque . The bolts and keys are made
of C20 steel and the flanges are made of FG 200. Take maximum shear stress ,
factor of safety of C20 Steel is 50N/mm2 , two respectively and maximum shear
stress for cast iron is 10N/mm2.

10. Design a cotter joint to connect 2 mild steel rods the joint is subjected to a 20 kN
Tensile force , the allowable limit of tensile , shear and crushing strengths are 60 N/mm2, 40N/mm2 And 75N/mm2 respectively.
