PART A — (10x2 = 20 marks)

1. Explain the term ‘lamellae’ in fibre structure.
2. Explain the term ‘scale’ in fibre morphology.
3. What is 4 spot x–ray diffraction pattern?
4. Give the range of wave number applied for the IR radiation study on fibres.
5. Define integral heat of sorption.
6. Explain the term transient equilibrium in moisture absorption.
7. Give reasons for the increase in extension of fibres on wet condition.
8. Define torsional rigidity.
9. Compare the objective and subjective methods of lustre measurement of fibres.
10. What is heat setting? provide its advantages.

PART B — (5x16 = 80 marks)

11. What is di–electricity? discuss the influence of different factors on the
di–electricity of fibres.
12. (a) Explain in detail the physical, chemical and morphological structure of cotton fibre.

(b) Explain the principle, construction and working of transmission kind electron microscopy with different specimen preparation techniques.
13. (a) Explain the moisture absorption behaviour of different fibres based on their physical structure, chemical structure and climatic conditions.
Or
(b) Explain with graphical representation the influence of humidity and temperature on the stress–strain relations of different fibres.
14. (a) What is flexural rigidity? Derive the relationship ranging from flexural rigidity and other fibre properties of fibres.
Or
(b) Explain any 2 methods of measuring the refractive index of fibres. Also provide the relationship ranging from bi–refringence and orientation factor.
15. (a) Give the different electrical circuits used to measure the electrical resistance of fibres. Also discuss the specimen preparation technique.
Or
(b) Write short notes on the subsequent :
(i) Mechanical conditioning of fibres
(ii) Influence of frictional property in textile processing.
