PART A (10 X two = 20)

11 (i) explain desalination by reverse osmosis process

(ii) describe hardness of water .Explain the estimation of hardness of water by EDTA method.

12 (a) (i) describe the terms gibbs free energy and helmholtz free energy.Discuss the variation of ? G with variation in temperature and pressure

(ii) Derive maxwell’s relations

OR

(b) (i) Derive gibbs –helmholtz formula for a process at constant pressure and at constant quantity.Mention the applications of this formula.

(ii) Derive vant hoff reaction isotherm .Calculate the equilibrium constant for a reactin at 298 K whose standard free energy is 163.43 kJ.mol ^ -1

13 (a) (i) Disucss the kinetics of chain rections with suitable example

(ii) discuss lindemann theory of unimolecular rections

OR

(b) (i) define the mechanism of enzyme catalysed reactions and derive Michaelis –Menten formula

(ii) explain the order and molecularity of complex rections.

14 (a) (i) Derive nerst formula and molecularity and mention it application

(ii) define the standard hydrogen electrode and its use in the determination of single electrode potentials.

(iii) Write the cell reaction and compute the EMF of the cell Fe/Fe ^2+ (0.01M) II Cu^ 2+(0.5 m) Cu at 25 degrees .The standard electrode potential of iron and copper electrode are -0.44 V and + 0.34V respectively

OR

(b) (i) discuss the principle of elctrochemicl corrosion with suitable example

(ii) define the impressed current and sacrificial anode methods of corrosion control

15 (a) (i) explain the kinds of polymerization with suitable examples.

(ii) Distinguish Thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics.

OR

(b) (i) discuss the mechanism of free radical polymerization.

(ii) Descirbe injection moulding of plastics with neat diagram
