Answer all questions
PART A (10 x 2 = 20 Marks)
1. What is the necessity of voltage regulation?
2. Give the two major control loops of large generation
3. What is the basic principle in pool operation?.
4. Specify the disadvantage of ALFC loop?
5. Draw a typical arrangement of a simple AVR.
6. Give the two kinds of capacitors used in shunt compensator.
7. What is DAC?
8. Give some of the input used in DAS
9. What is meant by incremental cost cure?
10. Write the co-ordination equation taking losses into account.
PART B (5 x 16 = 80 Marks)
11. The fuel inputs per hour of plants 1 and 2 are given as:
F1 = 0.2 P12 + 40P1 + 120 Rs. per hr
F2 = 0.25 P22 + 30P2 + 150 Rs. per hr
Determine the economic operating schedule and the corresponding cost of generation
if the maximum and minimum loading on each unit is 100 MW and 25 MW, the
demand is 180 MW and transmission losses are neglected. If the load is equally shared
by both. Determine the saving obtained by loading the units as per equal increment production
cost. (16)
12. (a) Discuss in detail the recent trends in real time control of power system. (16)
(or)
(b) With a neat diagram describe the automatic load frequency and voltage regulator
control loops of a synchronous generator. (16)
13. (a) Draw a block diagram to represent a two area system showing all necessary detail and explain
the various block (16)
(or)
(b) Draw the block diagram representation of the speed control mechanism of an individual
generator. State the variable and parameters that are involved in this model. From this,
develop the block diagram representation of a single control area. (16)
14. (a) Write short notes on:
(i) Stability compensation (8)
(ii) Effect the generator loading (8)
(or)
(b) What is static VAR. compensator? Where it is used? Explain its operation. Also state
the merits of static VAR compensator over other method of voltage control.
15. (a) What is meant by SCADA system? Explain. (16)
