Ex/BESUS/ CE-604/06 B.E. (CE) Part-Ill 6th Semester Examination, 2006

Transportation Engineering-I (CE-604)

Time : 3 hours    Full Marks : 100

Use separate answerscript for each half.

Assume data reasonably if required.

FIRST HALF (Answer O.No.l and TWO from the rest.)

1.    Distinguish between any five :    [5x4 = 20]

a)    Terrain and Gradient

b)    Camber and Superelevation

c)    Traffic Volume and Traffic Density

d)    Mobility and Accuribility

e)    Uncontrolled Intersection and Priority Intersection

f)    Warping stress and Temperature friction stress

g)    Shoulder and Service Road.

2.    a) Determine the minimum distance at which a large signboard can be placed

from the centre line of the 4 lane single carriageway road at the inner side of a horizontal curve of 300m radius so that safe movement will be possible. Take design speed of the road at curve as 80 km/h.

b) A 1 in 25 ascending grade will meet a descending grade of 1 in 30 in a National Highway of design speed 100 km/h. What should be the length of the vertical curve to be provided in between these two grades so that overtaking manoeuver will be possible? Also determine the height of the most critical point.

[8+7=15]

b)    If this intersection is planned to be improved by restricting the following movement, find out the number of crossing conflicts in each case.

i)    One way movement in one road but two-way movement in other road.

ii)    Two way movement in both the roads and right turning from east-west road to north-south road is only restricted.

c)    Determine the minimum amber time of a signal system if the maximum approach speed is 50 km/h. Also discuss on basis for determination of the minimum amber time. Take maximum deceleration 2.8 m/sec/sec, length of car 4.5m, insertion width 2.0m.    [6+3+6= 15]

4. a) A rigid pavement in a low volume single lane road is constructed. Check whether the critical stress in the rigid pavement is within allowable limit. Thickness of the slab = 25 cm E of concrete = 3 x 105 kg/cm2 ji of concrete = 0.15 a of concrete = 10 x 10_6/C Modulus of subgrade reaction = 8 kg/cm1 Design wheel load = 5100 kg Tyre pressure = 7 kg/cm2

Temperature difference between top and bottom of slab = 13C Intensity of traffic in the design year = 7000 CPVD

b) How do you taken care the effect of repetition of wheel in design of a pavement.    [12+3 = 15]

SECOND HALF (Answer O.No.5 and TWO from the rest.l

5.    Write short notes on any four: -    4x 5 = 20

(a)    Type and frequency of joints in Rigid Pavements

(b)    Soundness test for stone aggregates

(c)    Factors involved in design of embankments for roads

(d)    Gravel roads

(e)    Group index and its use in design of flexible pavement

(f)    Grouted Macadam Roads

6.    Explain briefly the different types Macadam roads. Describe in detail the construction procedure of a WBM road, indicating the condition of its adoption.

3+10 + 2= 15

7.    What is meant by Bitumen? Explain the terms Cutback and Emulsion. Briefly describe the difference between a Tack Coat and a Prime Coat. When is a float test adopted? Describe the test in detail with a neat sketch.    1+3 + 3+ 2 + 6=15

8.    Explain the function of different components of a flexible pavement. What are the factors affecting stability of a pavement? Explain the effects of such factors. Name different design method of flexible pavements. Briefly describe the CBR method for design of such pavement.    2 + 2 + 3 + 2 + 6=15
