Paper VIII – PROBABILITY AND STATISTICS

Time: 3 hours Maximum: 75 Marks

part A - (3 x 15 =45 marks)

1. discuss the Axiomatic Approach to probability. State and prove the generalised addition theorem of probabilities
2. describe a Binomial Random variable. Derive the properties of a Binomial distribution.
3. discuss the principle of lowest squares for fitting a curve. Derive the normal equations for fitting a line.
4. Derive the lines of regression and discuss the properties of the regression coefficients.
5. discuss the large sample test for the equality of means of 2 Normal Populations.

part B - ( five x five = 25 marks)
ans any 5 of the subsequent.

6. Derive the mean of a Poisson distribution.
7. State the properties of a Normal Distribution. 8. discuss the test for single mean.
9. The probability of a man hitting a target is 1/4. If he fires seven times what is the probability of his hitting the target atleast twice.
10. Out of 200 individuals, 40% show a certain trait and the number expected on a certain theory is 50%. obtain whether the number observed differs significantly from expectation.
11. discuss ANOVA for 1 factor of classification.
12. obtain the correlation coefficient for the subsequent data :
