Unit - I

Q.1. a) What are the advantages and disadvantages of a database approach?

b) Draw and explain the architecture of DBMS

c) Define data independence? Explain various types of data independence? [6+6+4]

Q.1. a) Differentiate between a file system and database oriented system.

b) Explain various kinds of symbols used in ER diagram

c) Differentiate between weak and strong entity.

d) Differentiate between Specialization and generalization with help of an example. [4+4+4+4]

 

Unit - II

 

Q.2. a) Define relational algebra. Explain briefly various set operations?

b) Explain Natural join and Rename operator with respect to Relational Algebra with the help of examples.

c) Consider the following relational database

Employee (person-name, street, city)

Works (person-name, company name, salary)

Company (company-name, city)

Manager (person-name, manager name)

Give relational algebra expression for each of the following queries:

i) Find the company that has the most employees.

ii) Find the company that has the smallest payroll.

iii) Find names, cities of residence of all employees who work for first Bank Corporation. [6+4+6]

Q.2. a) What is normalization? Discuss all the normal forms with the help of examples.
