(3) Feed water heater.

(4) Economiser.

(b) How can hydro plants be classified according to following:- [8]

(1) Water flow regulation.

(2) Head.

(3) Load.

OR

Q.1 (a) Distinguish between a breeder reactor, and a converter reactor. Derive an expression for maximum conversion of fertile material in a converter reactor. [8]

(b) Draw diagrams and explain the difference between open cycle and close cycle gas turbine plant. [8]

UNIT -II

Q.2 (a) Discuss the role of new energy sources in the context of present day encrisis. [8]

(b) What do you mean by my steam, wet steam and hot water geothennal system? Discuss the field of application of these systems. [8]

OR

Q.2 (a) How can solar energy be converted into electrical energy? Give a diagram showing the elements of such a plant. [8]

(b) Give a brief classification of various energy resources. What is the future of non-conventional energy sources in India? [8]

UNIT -III

Q.3 (a) Write short notes on following:

(I) Group Diversity factor

(2) Peak diversity factor

(3) Load factor

(4) Utilisation factor [8]

(b) The maximum demand of a power plant is 40 MW. The capacity factor is 0.5 and the utilisation factor is 0.8, find - [8]

(1) Load factor (2) Plant capacity

(3) Reserve capacity (4) Annual energy production

OR

Q.3 (a) What is the difference between chronological curve and load duration curve? And explain the difference between base load and peak load. [8]

(b) A Power station is to supply 4 areas whose peak loads are 10000 KW, 6000KW, 8000KW, and 7000KW. The diversity factor of load at the station is 1.5 and annual load factor is 65 %. Find maximum demand on station and annual energy supplied. Suggest installed capacity, taking into account the increase in maximum demand by 60% type of station and number and size of units. [8]

UNIT -IV

Q.4 (a) Explain why should the total generation cost per unit of thermal energy depend on the Station load factor? Draw a typical curve, showing this variation and justify its shape. [8]

(b) A steam station is erected at a cost ofRs. 2 x10. Assuming a salvage value of 15% , a useful life of 25 years and interest rate 8%, find the annual depreciation reserve -

(1) By straight line method

(2) By sinking fund method [8]

OR

Q.4 (a) What do you understand by the term "Load diversity"? What is its Significance? [8]

(b)Determine the generation cost per unit of energy from the following plant data: [8]

Installed capacity =120MW

Capital cost of plant = Rs. 40000 per kw

Interest and depreciation = 15%

Fuel consumption = 0.64 Kg/kwh

Fuel cost = Rs.1500 per 1000 kg

Salaries, Wages, repairs and other operating costs per annum = Rs. 50,000,000

peak load = 100MW

Load factor = 60%

UNIT-V

Q.5 (a) How do demand factor, load factor, and diversity factor, in a power system, affect the fixation of tariffs. [8]

(b) Find the power factor of an installation supplying the following loads: 300 kw at unity I!0wer factor, 1000 kw at 0.9 lagging power factor and 1500 kw at0.8 lagging power factor. Also find the maximum load at unity power factor which can be supplied by this substation. [8]

OR

Q.5 (a) Compare the advantages and disadvantages of using a synchronous condenser and a capacitor for power factor improvement. [8]

(b) Distinguish between Operating reselve and Spinning reserve? Explain the size of power plant units has been continuously increasing for the past many years, why? [8]
