(New Four Year Semester Scheme)

[Branch : Computer Engineering]

Paper V COMPUTER GRAPHICS

Time Allowed : Three Hours Maximum Marks 80

(1)    No supplementary answer-book will be given to any candidate. Hence the candidates should write the answer precisely in the Main answer-book only.

(2)    All the parts of one question should be answered at one place in the answer-book. One complete question should not be answered at different places in the answer-book.

Attempt any five questions.

All questions carry equal marks.

1.    (a) Explain the operating characteristics for raster -

refresh system.    8 .

(b) Suppose an RGB raster system is to be designed using an 8-inch by 10-inch screen with a resolution of 100 pixels-per-inch in each direction. If we want to store 6 bits-per-pixel in the frame buffer, how much storage (in bytes) do we need for the frame buffer?    8

2.    Write Bresenham line drawing algorithm for slopes in the range 0<m<l. What are the advantages of Bresenhams line drawing algorithm over DAA algorithm? Digitize the line-with end points (20, 10) and (30, 18) using Bresenham line drawing algorithm.

16

3.    (a) Prove the following:

(i)    A uniform scaling (Sx=Sy) and a rotation form a commutative pair of operations, but in general scaling and rotation are not commutative operations.

(ii)    Reflection about the liney=x is equivalent to a reflection relative to x-axis followed by a counter-clockwise rotation of 90.

(it/) Two successive rotations are commutative.

3x3

(b) What do you mean by object precision and image precision? How is -buffer method better than Z-but'fer method of visible surface detection? 7

4.    (a) Describe different types of parallel projections

used in computer graphics.    6

(b) Describe perspective projections and explain following terms:

(z) View volume

(ii)    Vanishing point

(iii)    Depth cueing.    10

5.    (a) What do you mean by spline curve? What is the

difference between interpolation and approximation curves? Explain the concept of parametric continuity.    6

(fa) Explain the characteristics of Bezier curve. Derive the Bezier blending function for four control point (Xi, Yi) for z=l to 4.    10

6.    (a) Explain the Cohen-Sutherland line clipping

method with a suitable example.    8

(b) What do you mean by 4-connected and 8-connected region? How is it used in boundary fill algorithm? What is the advantage of using a flood: fill algorithm over boundary fill algorithm, for filling,a region with given color?    8

7.    (a) Explain steps for performimg general three-

dimensional rotations and derive a composite matrix for it.    8

(b) Explain Gouraud shading method. How' is it better than content intensity method?    8

8.    Write short notes on (any four):
